Born in Oakland Ca and raised in the Bay Area my entire life, I consider myself a true native. After my school years, I began my Banking and Finance career with Bank of the West in the mid seventies. I then followed a career path that gravitated more towards financial services and managed a local finance office for a number of years. This led into a regional position that incorporated training and business development covering 12 western states. This company was purchased and eventually dissolved and I found myself in need of a new place of employment to call home. Going back to the basics, the branch banking industry was calling. Ten years ago I found myself back in an arena I always enjoyed. When the Castro Valley office of Bank of the West had a new opening in Feb 2002, I happily accepted the position of V.P., Bank Manager where I still work today.
I currently hold the position of President of the Castro Valley Chamber of Commerce . Along with this I am an active member of the Castro Valley Sunrise Rotary Club and on the Executive Board of “The Kids Breakfast Club” (TKBC) a non-profit children's nutrition and education program for low to moderate income families.
I enjoy people, reading, music and the great outdoors. Among my more unusual hobbies is organizing a rodeo parade group of about 200 people for an annual camping event and rodeo. I also write and perform personalized wedding ceremonies on request.
My greatest accomplishment is my family. I am a wife, mother and grandmother. |

Karen JonkeKaren Jonke has been a resident of Castro Valley since 1949. In the 55 plus years that she has been part of this community her three beautiful children were born and raised here and 3 of her 5 grandchildren attend
Castro Valley Schools.
Karen has been in the hospitality industry for over 40 years. Krayons was opened in 1979 right after the law changed stating it was legal for women to tend bar in the State of California. In her early years of business she would meet Fred her now husband of 20 years, who has been the rock in her life. Over the many years in Castro Valley Karen has supported many events including the Rowell Ranch Rodeo Wild Cow Milking and Belt Buckle Award, Rowell Ranch Rodeo Parade and the Castro Valley Chamber of Commerce Fall Festival. With the help of friends and family she has helped to raise money and support for MDA, Breast Cancer Awareness and the Castro Valley Library. Karen's warmth and kindness resonates not only in her businesses but in her personal life. Each year she invites her friends and customers to bring the children into her house to celebrate the Christmas Spirit and visit with Santa Fred!
Karen attributes her many years of success to her family, the employees who have helped her throughout the years and her many loyal customers.
Karen Jonke is a hard working ethical business owner who has invested her life in the community of Castro Valley for over 50 years. We congratulate Karen Jonke of Krayons Gallery 2007 Business Person of the year.
